the UPSC Interview: A Guide to Success
(by Mayuri Khanna - given interview 4 times though not cleared exam)
Interview is a crucial phase in the whole process where the
UPSC aims to assess not just the knowledge of candidates but also their
personality, communication skills, and ability to handle diverse situations.
Hi, my name is Mayuri
Khanna, I have given UPSC interview 4 times.
So through this blog, I will be sharing my experience and will try to delve into the key aspects of preparing for the UPSC interview and the qualities and attributes that the Commission expects from candidates with examples.
1. Know Your DAF
(Detailed Application Form):
·
The first step in your interview preparation is
a thorough understanding of your DAF. Your DAF is a reflection of your life,
experiences, and achievements.
·
Be prepared to answer questions related to your
educational background, work experience, hobbies, and any gaps in your
education or employment.
·
Knowing your DAF inside out will give you the
confidence to tackle questions with ease.
For example: If
you have written hobby as any particular sports, then prepare important facts
about rules, players, any recent changes, etc.
I have written my hobby as Dance and I have
also learned Kathak, so they have asked questions related to that but also
related to other dance personalities.
Further, they have asked questions related to
my Birth Place, Place of Residence, etc. Famous personalities from that region,
etc.
2. Current Affairs
and General Awareness:
Stay updated on current affairs, national and international
events, government policies, and socio-economic issues.
The UPSC interview panel is keen on assessing your awareness
of the world around you. Read newspapers, magazines, and follow reputable
online sources to stay informed.
For example: recently there has been expulsion
of MPs, s questions related to that can be asked.
They can ask Opinion based questions to check
your mental state and thinking process. Try to be rational, your answer should
not be biased.
3. Clarity of Thought
and Expression:
The ability to articulate your thoughts clearly and
concisely is a crucial aspect of the UPSC interview.
Practice expressing your ideas on various topics, ensuring
that your answers are well-structured and to the point. Develop the skill of
framing balanced arguments and opinions.
The arguments should be justified through facts
and figures if needed.
4. Ethical and Moral
Integrity:
UPSC places a strong emphasis on the ethical and moral
integrity of candidates. Be prepared to answer questions related to ethical
dilemmas, integrity in public service, and your personal code of conduct. It is
essential to demonstrate a commitment to upholding values and principles.
They can ask some situational based case
studies. Try to be practical as well as rational while answering the question.
5. Effective
Communication Skills:
Good communication is not just about speaking; it also
involves active listening. Pay
attention to the questions asked by the panel and respond appropriately.
Maintain a positive body language, make eye
contact, and be respectful while expressing your views.
6. Confidence and
Composure:
Confidence is key during the UPSC interview. Maintain a calm
and composed demeanor, even if faced with challenging questions. Remember, the
interview is not just about getting the right answers but also about handling
pressure with grace.
They will ask some tricky questions. In my
case, they have asked some questions related to English Grammar.
I have done my B.Tech in Electronics and the
have started asking questions on Electrical Engineering.
So be prepared for some twists and turns.
However, the basic key is your CONFIDENCE and RIGHT
ATTITUDE.
I have not been able to clear the final cutoff, however,
hope that the above stated insights may help you in clearing the exam.
Conclusion:
The UPSC interview is an opportunity to showcase not only
your knowledge but also your personality and attributes. By focusing on the key
areas mentioned above, you can enhance your preparation and face the interview
panel with confidence.
Remember, the UPSC is not just selecting candidates with
knowledge; it is selecting future leaders who possess the qualities and
attributes necessary for effective and ethical governance. Good luck!
