Toyota
Unveils World's First BS6 Stage-II Electrified Flex-Fuel Vehicle: A Leap
Towards Sustainable Mobility
Description: Explore Toyota's innovative BS6
Stage-II electrified flex-fuel vehicle, combining ethanol and electric power
for eco-friendly and efficient transportation, aligned with India's emission
regulations and sustainable goals.
Introduction
Toyota
Kirloskar Motor revealed the prototype of the world's first-ever Bharat Stage-6
(BS6) Stage-II electrified flex-fuel vehicle.
This
innovative vehicle can operate using a blend of up to 85% ethanol in petrol and
is equipped with an electric powertrain. The Ministry of Petroleum &
Natural Gas has also emphasized the potential of flex-fuel vehicles to replace
traditional petrol with ethanol blends exceeding 20%.
About
An
Electrified Flex Fuel Vehicle combines both a Flex Fuel engine and an electric
powertrain, delivering the advantages of increased ethanol utilization and
enhanced fuel efficiency.
Flex Fuel
Strong Hybrid Electric Vehicles (FFV-SHEV): When you
integrate FFV technology with robust hybrid electric technology, it's called
FFV-SHEVs. Strong hybrid refers to full hybrid vehicles capable of running on
either electric power or gasoline independently.
In
contrast, mild hybrids cannot operate exclusively on one of these modes and
employ the secondary mode primarily as a complement to the primary propulsion
mode.
Importance:
Incorporating
an electric powertrain reduces the dependence on traditional fuels,
contributing to sustainable transportation and supporting India's 'Aatmnirbhar
Bharat' initiative by increasing ethanol production.
Much like
Self-Charging Hybrid Electric Vehicles (SHEVs), this vehicle can achieve
significantly improved fuel efficiency, making the most of both ethanol and
electricity.
By
promoting Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFVs), India can harness its abundant ethanol
potential, thereby reducing the consumption of gasoline.
This
vehicle marks a substantial step towards reducing carbon emissions and
fostering eco-friendly mobility, aligning with global endeavors to combat
climate change.
What Are
BS6 (Stage II) Regulations?
BS6 Norms:
The Bharat Stage (BS) norms are regulations established by the Government of
India to control the release of air pollutants from motor vehicles.
These BS
standards are based on European emission standards, and their enforcement is
overseen by the Central Pollution Control Board.
Currently,
all newly sold and registered vehicles in India must comply with the BS-VI
version of emission regulations.
BS6 Stage
II: BS6 (Stage II) sets even more stringent emission limits
compared to the initial BS6 standards.
BS6 (Stage
II) includes Real Driving Emissions (RDE) and Corporate Average Fuel Economy
(CAFE 2) standards, as well as On-Board Diagnostics.
The new RDE
test results will provide a more accurate estimate of the emissions likely to
be generated by vehicles in real traffic conditions, considering frequent speed
changes, accelerations, and decelerations.
Onboard diagnostic (OBD) systems monitor and report the status and performance of various vehicle subsystems and sensors.
