PROJECT UDBHAV
Introduction
'Udbhav', translating to 'origin' or 'genesis', is an
ambitious initiative by the Indian Army, acknowledging the timeless scriptures
and writings of the nation, aimed at revitalizing the profound knowledge
spanning centuries for the benefit of modern military strategies.
This project seeks to synthesize ancient wisdom with contemporary military practices, forging a unique and holistic approach to address modern security challenges.
Lessons from Ancient
Texts
1. Chanakya's
Arthashastra
Chanakya's Arthashastra emphasizes the importance of
strategic partnerships, alliances, and diplomacy, aligning with contemporary
military practices such as international cooperation and soft power projection.
This aligns with modern military codes of ethics and principles of the Geneva
Convention.
2. Thirukkural
Thirukkural, a classical Tamil text authored by Thiruvalluvar, advocates ethical conduct in all endeavors, including warfare. It harmonizes with modern military codes of ethics and principles of the Geneva Convention.
A study of prominent military campaigns and leaders from
ancient India is crucial. Empires like Chandragupta Maurya, Ashoka, Cholas, and
the Ahom Kingdom provide valuable historical examples of successful expansion
and governance.
1. Naval Battle of
Saraighat
The Naval Battle of Saraighat in 1671, led by Lachit
Borphukan, exemplifies the use of clever diplomatic negotiations, psychological
warfare, military intelligence, and exploiting strategic weaknesses of the
Mughals.
2. Chhatrapati
Shivaji and Maharaja Ranjit Singh
Chhatrapati Shivaji's guerrilla tactics and construction of
naval forts along the Western seaboard to ward off external threats highlight
the practical application of ancient military wisdom.
Previous Research
Efforts
The Army Training Command and other academic institutions
have delved into ancient Indian scriptures to compile valuable insights and
strategies, such as the 'Compendium of 75 Stratagems' and studies linking
Indian culture with strategic thinking.
Project UDBHAV's
Holistic Approach
Project UDBHAV aims to integrate ancient wisdom with modern
military pedagogy through interdisciplinary research, workshops, and leadership
seminars. It seeks to bring forth previously unexplored thoughts and theories
related to strategic thinking, statecraft, and warfare, enriching military
training curricula.
Preserving and
Documenting Knowledge
This project is an endeavor to sustain and bridge the gap in
preserving Indian heritage's grand strategy, strategic thinking, and statecraft
discussions. A series of events and workshops will culminate in a publication
in January 2024, documenting and institutionalizing this valuable knowledge.
A Future-Ready Indian
Army
'Project UDBHAV' signifies the Indian Army's commitment to a
future where military might and strategic thinking are enhanced by the nation's
rich and strategic past. By merging age-old wisdom with modern military
pedagogy, the Indian Army is preparing for a robust, progressive, and
future-ready force in tune with the demands and dynamics of contemporary
warfare and diplomacy.
